Chapel of Our Lord of Bom Despacho

Address
Rua de Santo André - Ancede - Baião

The chapel of the Lord of Bom Despacho integrates the architectural complex of the monastery of Santo André de Ancede.

The construction of this chapel is situated in the first half of the 18th century, reflecting the architectural taste of the time, when adopting the octagonal floor plan and the typical Baroque style of Johan, for interior decoration. From the second half of the sixteenth century the monastery of St. Andrew of Ancede was in possession of the convent of St. Domingos of Lisbon, so this connection is deeply materialized in the sculptural and pictorial decoration of this chapel.

The decorative theme of the chapel is that of the Rosary, and is explicit on the painted canvas on the tribune of the main altar, where the Virgin Mary delivers the Rosary to St. Dominic, used by the Dominican monk in the conversion of heretics to the Catholic faith.

All the sculptural sets of the altarpieces present the Mysteries of Christ, in a three-dimensional and theatrical form, as a true play. The sculptures are positioned as theater actors, framed in stages with painted scenes and sculpted curtains.

The ship features a set of six retables with the Joyful Mysteries.

The Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries are depicted in the altarpieces of the chancel, whose roof boxes are part of the symbols of the Passion of Christ.
