The mountains of Serra do Castelo are an integral part of Baião, making the transition of its peaks to the flowing waters of the Douro River.
Despite its similarities with the mountains of Serra da Aboboreira, these have a broader range of natural conditions, including the schist area, the low-gradient hills in the vicinity of rougher areas and sloped agricultural forests, occupied with small villages on the upper and centre parts of the river basins. The urban settlements lie within agricultural areas and Pinus Pinaster and eucalyptus tree forests.
The Portela de Carneiro connects to the mountains of the Serra do Marão.
The agricultural and agroforestry landsape of Viariz , Valadares and Gestaçô are located at a lower height and gradually connect with the Douro River. The scenery is rich in ecological diversity.
